From one ignoramus to another

Samuel's school had their first football game of the season last night. He is not really a football person, but as a good teacher he went to support the team. I think he must have been really bored, because we exchanged several texts throughout the night--he at the game and me at Kent's house in Arlington.

Samuel: 14 to 0...we're doing well

Anna: Glad to hear it!

Samuel: OK, they are running around a lot. But they stop when the whistle blows. I have that much figured out.

Samuel: Now a dude ran with the ball and fell down and the refs talked and pointed and now our team is very happy...something good happened?

Samuel: Now they are measuring the ground. Shouldn't they have done that before the game?

Anna: Erica says that means the first down was so close that they can't call it without measuring carefully.

Anna: I don't know what a first down is.

Samuel: It's a way to rate the quality of down feathers. "First down" is the highest quality and in ancient times could only be sold to the members of the king's household.

Anna: Duh. I should have figured that out.

Samuel: First down is now used in the padding of football helmets. If the ref suspects that the down is of lower quality he will measure the dent left in the ground by the football players. There is no penalty for a second or third rate down, but the team looses face and must crawl crab style off the field at the end of the game.

Anna: Who supplies the down?

Samuel: Geese, of course!

Anna: But for the first down it must be supplied by geeseof the royal goose family.

Samuel: *grin*

Later, the next morning, in Gmail chat...

Samuel: We won 20-0, but with a lot of injuries.

Anna: ouch. I'm going to post the yexts on my blog.

It's been two years now since Jon-E died. It doesn't seem like that long.

I got to work with a really neat lady today. Her name is Elizabeth and she has MS. I worked with her just for one afternoon and it was lots of fun! She's one of 9 kids and her mom just passed away a couple months back. She's a real tease and her entire time at work we were going back and forth with coworkers. I laughed so hard!

Samuel and I were ruminating on this the other day. We are both very similar and we have very similar hobbies and likes, except for computer games. We never fall victim to the same addicting games. I like all the varities of 'match-3' games and he never cares for those. I like puzzles, he doesn't. He likes the online game Conquer and I'm bored to tears by it. We thought that was interesting.

Learning faith and patience

is no fun. I want a well-paying, political job so bad and I want it now. Bruce Long was very encouraging this morning in Sunday school. He reassured Samuel and I that as we continue to live for Christ He will provide the perfect job that we want so bad. However, he also threw that "wait on Him" bit. *sigh*

Curiousity

Samuel can see how many people view a photo on his flickr page. He noticed that the picture I posted on my blog had 5 or 6 times the average number of views. So now I'm curious, who are all these people? I thought I only had about 10 readers. I'm in danger of getting a big head.

A bulletin from the couch

where I have pretty much taken up permanent residence. :)

Everyone but Dad and BonnieJean went down to the Bowie tournament over the weekend.  Samuel placed third in black belt weapons after deciding on the spur of the moment to compete.  Dillian Ramey and Crista Bailey took first and second, respectively, so he's hanging with the big dogs, for sure.  He also placed third in the super fight, coming in behind Greg Partridge and Luke Rosebure.  Ethan didn't fight because it was only a week from his black belt test, but he placed first in adult underbelt weapons and adult brown kata.  He got a nine from Mr. Holzbauer on his weapons kata!  Naomi came to help coach and decided suddenly to compete in kata!  She didn't place, but I'm so proud of her!  And after we all saw the flying pigs, she decided to do fight a 13 year old who didn't have anyone else in her division to fight.  Naomi won!  Joshua placed third in kata and second in fighting.  Isaac placed second in kata.  He lost his first fight by one point to the boy who went on to win the whole division.  Irony.  At the last tournament, Caleb forgot his kata and had to make it up.  This time he remembered it perfectly!

  Before the tournament, Scott and Theresa tested for fourth degree and passed.  I'm so excited for them!  I'm kinda disappointed they didn't do any board breaking, but that's just because I so enjoy watching them do it so well!  I can't believe they managed to test and run a tournament in the same day.

  After the tournament, little Alexis hit my right foot while I was standing in the hallway.  When I unwrapped my foot to take a shower Sunday night it was swollen really bad and black all down the right side and top of it with pooled blood under the skin.  It totally freaked me out.  Dad prayed over it right then and we called Orjala first thing Monday morning.  I didn't go to work or karate.  We unwrapped it Monday afternoon out of pure curiousity and it looked tons better.  I don't think a bruise on a normal, active person would go down that quickly.  It was just an answer to prayer!

  While I was home resting Monday night, Caleb passed his yellow belt test, Dad passed his orange belt test, and Isaac did all of his blue belt test with the exception of fighting and board breaking.  He'll do those Monday night.  I'm so excited for all of them!

  In other fantastic-answers-to-prayer news, I found out today that I passed the Comp II test out!  This means I get to graduate this May!  I am so wildly excited!

In the middle of the night...

I have turned into an almost completely nocturnal studyer.  I don't think it's the noise in my house--I work around that all the time.  It's like my brain doesn't get settled into studying mode until at least 10 p.m.  It's not like I'm doing nothing before that, though, it's just not schoolwork stuff.

  I got to work on chintoe a good bit tonight, got some good pointers from Samuel.  I also worked on suji no kun, but it still feels way too sloppy to me.  Of course, it didn't help that I was doing it with a bo twelve inches too long for me.

  OK, I'm throwing myself in bed like a good girl.  I'll still probably need a nap tomorrow, though.

Cozy night

  I'm making sleepty time tea right now, perfect for a late night cap.

  BonnieJean made the most luscious guacamole this evening.  I didn't know I liked guacamole.  I had never even tried it, because I had assumed it was spicy.  I discovered, however, that it's actually quite mild and I like it.

  I got to do some quill work with Mama this evening.  Writing with a quill is twice as fun as writing with a regular pen.  We got to having fun rhyming and making up silly poems.  I'm not going to put any up here because Mama's going to put them up on her blog.

  For the first time in three years we have neighbors to our right!  They're Paul, Evette, and Nathan.  Nathan is 9; he and Caleb seem to be hitting it off well.  Evette is originally from San Antonio.  They are here for Paul to attend the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa.  They were living on the wet side of Washington state and poor southern Evette is very glad to have left.  I don't think I would survive long on the wet side of Washington, either.  I need my sunshine!

  Samuel starts his full internship tomorrow!  We're all so excited!  Everybody pray for him!  Do I have enough explanation points?!

  Dad goes back to work tomorrow. :(  He's had the last 2+ weeks off and we've all gotten spoiled.  Going back to work wouldn't be so bad I guess if he liked his job more.  I wish I could just wish the perfect job into existence for him.

  I installed Age of Kings on my laptop today.  I love that game!  Everyone hold me accountable to uninstall it on the 13th when I go back to school.

  I'm going to go sip my tea and read some out of Ephesians.  Love y'all!

  So, I'm officially switching from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome.  As Samuel said, "Someday the world will be run by Google, and it will be a fast and efficient world."
