Saturday afternoon Mama and I are coming out of Walmart. We're on the right side of one of the parking lanes right behind what looked to be a pair of grandparents with their 2 or 3 year old grandson. A suburban passes us going the other way and the family in front of us starts crossing the lane. The little kid is just following his grandparents who are not holding his hand or even looking back to check that he's still following. In the middle of the lane is a drain with a grate over it that's highly fascinating to little kids. Naturally, the little boy stops and inspects it. Meanwhile, the Suburban realizes that if he backs up he can get a parking space. The driver looks behind him, sees that the grandparents are already across the road and obviously he can't see the little kid right behind him. So he starts backing up. Since the grandparents are oblivious, this leaves Mama and I as the only ones who get what's going on. We both start yelling, Mama runs at the driver, and I run at the kid. The driver stops and finally the grandma turns around and figures out what's happening. And then she was mad at the driver of all people! Thankfully, it wasn't until we were driving out of the parking lot that Mama and I realized the sequence of events and how irresponsible those people were. When we had finally gotten everything straight Mama said, "Just think we saved that kid's life!" I said, "That's right we did!" *short silence* Me: "And then we left him with that woman!"
