Another person at the RI brought up the question... "Why are the youth leaving the church?" And I said..
I'm assuming in my argument here that the youth we're speaking about is an honest-to-goodness Christian.
Why do youth leave church? Because the youth wants to leave church. It ain't nobody else's fault. The parents need to strive to raise him in the way they believe God is leading them to. The church needs to strive to be the kind of church God is leading them to be. The youth needs to strive to be the kind of youth God is leading him to be. If everyone is doing that, everything is good.
I don't believe that youth need to be especially catered to. I don't believe in teenage bibles, middle age bibles, and senior bibles. What you need is a Bible. If something is a good truth (say... the Prayer of Jabez or In His Steps) teenagers should be smart enough to just read it, and not need it hyped up and dumbed down so they can get an entertainment experience out of it.
That's another one of my peeves. Trying to constantly entertain the youth. Sure, the youth can have fun just like anybody else and there's a time for it. But I find it disturbing how there is little time for prayer or silence in youth groups and services. The youth minister or the speaker talks and talks, we sing, share prayer requests, have a prayer, have fun, and eat. That's all good, and I enjoy that (ask JC...) But prayer is more than us talking. It's a conversation with God. We never shut up and sit still long enough to know that He is God.
Another thing is the disdain the youth has for older people. It is soooooo against history and logic to think old people are out of touch and not up-to-date. Does it ever occur to you that someday YOU might get old? You might be out of touch and not up-to-date? You want everyone to listen to you now, will you not want them to listen then because you're old and they're young?
