*stares at the screen* OH, what to write.
OK, let's go with the topic of servant leadership. We just ordained 4 new deacons at church this evening so it's kinda on my mind right now.
1Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
John 13:1-5
Compare that to other ancient leaders. The dude that built the Great Wall of China. Genghis Khan. Ceaser. Paris of Troy. Odysesseus (sp? looks like too many Ss.) Or the mythological gods of any country. They would never perform the work of a slave. They would never give their lives to save the very people executing them.
Ok, moving a step down here from God to servant leaders I know.
Dad-who has centered his whole life on personally (not outsourcing) taking care of Mama and us. Dad has gone to great lengths to teach servanthood to us not just by example but by having us take care of Mama and younger siblings. I'm always flabbergasted when I hear of dads who get off work and then don't get to work. Dad does more work than anybody else in our family.
Mr. Murry exemplifies servanthood via teaching for me. He also goes to extreme lengths to communicate to us brown belts the view of students as people we serve. He never does anything as an ego trip. Anytime he does do something totally amazing it's to teach us and to glorify God. Even though he enjoys karate immensley he only does it to glorify God and serve us.
I have total confidence in the 4 men we just ordained today because of 2 things that they all exemplify. 1, they're all men of prayer. 2, they were already servant leaders not only in the church but with their wives and kids which is the most basic unit of servant leaders.
I think my biggest problem with servanthood is my desire for recognition. I'll serve a lot of times just so I can get the pat on the back. Or I'll serve just because it's something I enjoy it. I also struggle with only wanting to serve on my terms and when I volunteer. I'm just the humblest of servants until I'm told to do something a different way. I don't want to serve if someone has told me to do it or if someone is already expecting me to volunteer. The true test of a servant is if you act like one when you're treated like one.
