This is an email I wrote to Naomi...
Dear Naomi,
Wassup? (That should be said in the tradition of the Budweiser commercial.)
I've noticed something strange about the cows over here. I've only seen a few actually chewing and none lying down. They'll be standing in the middle of a green field doing just that-standing. Not grazing, not chewing the cud, not sleeping, just standing there. It's really weird.
I got to meet the famous Dorm Susan last night. She's going to high school in Shamen now but came for a visit over the break for Dragon Boat Festival. She's having knee surgery in a couple of days to transplant some tendons (possibly ligaments-hard to differentiate those two with a language barrier) from the back of her leg to the front of her knee. Apparently she tore both the tendons and the cartilage in her knee pretty bad over a year ago but was told it would just get better on it's own. Well, it hasn't and now it's worst because it went so long without treatment. She seemed really glad to see BonnieJean and liked the Phillipino scarf Samuel gave her.
I read the first 4 chapters of Deuteronomy last night. I got to thinking about what giants there are in my life that I run from or murmer at God about. Right now I think I could be held back from what ministry God has planned for me with the Chens by getting overwhelmed by the not even really big giants of inconvenient living conditions and not knowing how to read our hosts (they're very Taiwanese).
I got a forward from Mama so I guess the computer is still functioning. Did y'all get it worked on?
Way-ling has a pretty big classical music cd collection. I just finished listening to a Perhlman cd of Bach and now I think I'll try a cello cd.
Do you know if the church got BJ's email? Did Mama ever give Sandy the email from Samuel to the children's church? How's French doing? We're praying for him.
I'm getting really excited about the church's English camp! It's going to be a lot like a VBS with a foreign language emphasis. Kuyu went over the schedule with us and we're drawing up camp rules right now (#1-- obey all rules). Our big goals are that the camp kids would start coming to Sunday school, that the kids' English will improve so the parents will send them back next year and maybe even come to church themselves, and of course that the kids would see God's abundant love for them. Besides English the big learning thrust is going to be prayer. At this point BonnieJean, who had been practically bouncing about with excitement, exclaimed "This is going to be so much better than a King Car camp!!!"
I have to go meet Samuel in town pretty soon, and I'll be there probably the whole afternoon; so I'd better figure out what I'm taking with me.
Love you!
Anna
